Johann Jakob Scheuchzer has exerted a decisive influence for popularizing the diluvialist theory of John Woodward, based on the recognition of the organic origin of fossils. His Complaints and Claims of the Fishes (1708) contributed also both to the acceptance of this concept and to the consideration that fossils are witnesses of the Deluge.
