Study of photonic membranes in the MIR for individual thermal comfort

Clothing is an essential part of our daily life in order to satisfy the thermal comfort of the human body. However, conventional clothing generally exhibits poor thermal performance and weakly controlled. Indeed, a sudden change in the temperature of the room considerably affects the thermal comfort of the body. Hence the need for continuous use of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in indoor areas, in order to maintain an appropriate thermal environment of the room. However, this solution clearly shows its limitations by the huge energy consumption which affects the sectors of economy, energy, and environment. Therefore, the development of new textiles able to manage the temperature of the human body close to the skin, over a wide range of ambient temperatures, without additional energy input, appears to be an urgently needed alternative solution. The human body, at a skin temperature of 34 °C, emits electromagnetic (EM) radiation in the mid-infrared (MIR) responsible for more than 50% of individual’s heat loss. Understanding and control those radiation would make it possible to control the temperature of the microclimate, corresponding to the air space between the body and the textile. In that context, designing passive textiles, which modulate MIR radiation, presents a challenge for the scientific community. The objective of the thesis is to theoretically and experimentally study the spectral responses in the MIR (5-15 µm) of different membranes with low refractive indexes in order to control individual thermoregulation. We have shown that the insertion of particles into membranes modulates its absorption and therefore, according to Kirchhoff's law, its emissivity. Based on these results, we proposed a high performant radiative warming asymmetric fabric for environments from cold to moderate temperatures. Secondly, we extended the study to the transmission, reflection, absorption and diffusion properties of polymer-based photonic membranes. We have shown that these latter, under specific geometric conditions, were able to modulate the EM radiation in the MIR, thus making it possible to act on the thermoregulation of the microclimate. The thesis work is based on analytical and numerical calculations by the finite element method (FEM). The numerical study was coupled with cleanroom manufacturing experiments at IEMN and infrared spectroscopy characterization (FTIR).
