Analysis and modelling of the randomness in terminals antennas

Résumé

This paper addresses the modelling of the radioelectric properties of wireless terminals, taking into ac-count the numerous sources of variabilities which can be encountered in a real use context. After an introduction about the major issues, it first concentrates on antenna statistical modelling and secondly on the combination of terminal and radio channel variabilities. Antenna statistical modelling is tackled through a small signal approach which is valid when the randomness is “small” and also more generally by using modal expansion methods for the electromagnetic fields, which allows carrying out the statistical analysis on the parameters of the modes. Combined terminal and channel modelling is approached by analysing the statistics of the “effective gain” of the terminal in its local propagation context and by modelling it with simple and suitably approximate distributions such as the lognormal.
